Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh discussed the state of xenotransplantation--the use of cells, organs, or tissue from one animal in another--in a review in The Lancet. In that review, they touch on the history of one particular subject: pig-to-human transplants. Their conclusion? Clinical trials of pig-to-human transplants could begin in just a few years.

The Witch Doctors’ Gift: Potential New Drugs from a Cup of Tea

A physician on a medical relief mission to Africa sees pregnant women sip a medicinal tea prepared by local witch doctors when the time for birth arrives. Made from the leaves of a plant called “kalata-kalata,” the tea speeds labor and delivery. Scientists analyze the plant and discover a remarkable new substance. The research puts them on course for discovery of potential new drugs for diseases that affect millions of people worldwide.

Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow, Inc (BSOT) is a 501 c3, not-for-profit organization.  The organization is based in the United States, but also facilitates projects in Third World countries.
Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow, Inc. offers several services to the public:
*      Scholarships that are not necessarily based upon GPA but also upon character and/or potential.
*      Paid internships and research opportunities for ages 16 and up.
*       Science bowls/contests for the community – both students and non students.  Our science bowls/contests offer cash prizes, and ages 16 and up are eligible to participate.  There is a novice division (no experience to minimal experience), an intermediate division and an expert division (those with a science degree).
*      Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow is in the process of building an online school that will offer an accelerated masters program in chemistry as well as a chemistry certification program.
The main aspirations of Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow, Inc. are to educate the public as well as to encourage the public to gain a love and an appreciation for science.  There are many organizations that offer science contests, scholarships, and internships.  However, Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow, Inc. is atypical, because it makes these opportunities available to those who are usually over-looked. The goal of Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow is to provide science education to all who are in need, both here in America and abroad.
History of Organization:
Dr. Bretta Blanton, the executive director of Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow, has long possessed a passion for science as well as science education.   It is her ambition to use science as a means to fix some of the world’s problems. Moreover, it is Dr. Blanton’s belief that science is for everyone. Therefore, it is her passion to promote science literacy for all. So, Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow Inc, 501 c (3) - offers opportunities in science for people of all walks of life.

Recent Accomplishments:

*      The Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow’s Cash Award for science majors was awarded for the first time in 2010.  Applicants had to write an essay along with their application.  The winner was selected based upon character, level of financial need, and the quality of his/her essay.  This award is meant to be used as a supplement for school-related expenses.

*      Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow has also sponsored the Chemistry Student of the Year Award, in 2010.  This award is for Fourth year Chemistry students, and it is based upon, academic performance, character, recommendations, as well as community service.  This award included a cash prize, certificate, and a gift certificate from amazon.com to be used for books.

*      Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow is also funding departmental teaching assistants (TA) for the University of Malawi’s (Africa) Chemistry Department.  The Teaching Assistants receive a monthly stipend. These stipends are greatly needed in a country like Malawi- which is amongst the five poorest countries in the world.

*      Brilliant Scientists has also helped to facilitate several workshops in Malawi that are aimed at getting more women into the sciences.  These workshops are also aimed at making the general public to feel comfortable with science.  The workshops have been well received and are in great demand.

*      Brilliant Scientists has started its own study abroad program for science majors.  This program helps students from 3rd world countries to go and pursue science degrees in the USA.  In the future, Brilliant Scientists will help American students to go and to study or pursue science degrees in 3rd world countries.  This program is currently focusing on students who want to pursue an MS or a PhD.

*      Brilliant Scientists has also organized a series of contests, in Malawi, which are opened to everyone over the age of 16 (this includes non-scientists). The next contest is scheduled to be held from March 30 to April 30, 2011. All proceeds from these contests will go towards the Brilliant Scientists Scholarship Fund.  There will be a different prize each month.

Contestants are given up to 1 month to study the booklet.  The question will come only from the study booklet.  At the end of the month, the winning ticket will is drawn.  However, that person will only win if they can answer the science question that will be put before them.  The goal of Brilliant Scientists of Tomorrow is to promote science education for all people.

Sample questions are posted on the Brilliant Scientists Face book page. This helps people to understand what the final question may be like. And, it will also provide people with a chance to win small prizes up to the end of the month. Only those who have entered the contest will be eligible for these prizes. A different science question will be posted on the facebook page each week. Whoever answers it correctly first will win a small prize that week.
